To answer that question consider this one:

Would you drink water containing carcinogenic contaminants?

Lets take it as said that we all replied NO!

That being said we could be drinking them without realizing it.

To produce drinkable water for the local community the methods and substances used at water treatment systems can contribute to these unwelcome contaminants being in the water that is provided.

The operation usually requires that water additives, usually chlorine based, be added to kill off micro-organisms. On completion of the treatment there is often traces of impurities from some water treatment chemicals. These are given the term disinfection byproducts. Even though these are kept within strict limits at certain levels they can still cause serious health problems.
