Hasbro has created a lot of good board and party games for a good number of years now, and they have established their name more as a family friendly company with the game “Taboo”, created by Hasbro in 1989. The simple object of the game? Well, you just have to have a partner guess the word on your card without having to use the word or else, additional words are listed on the card.

The game takes its origins from the game Catch Phrase, published by the same company, where players guess words with the use of different gestures and other verbal cues.

You could start playing this simple and enjoyable game by having the following equipment: a one-minute hourglass to keep the time; a tray to hold your cards, a buzzer or a noise-generator to indicate that time is up; any piece of paper; some pencils to keep score; and a few hundred cue cards with different words on both sides.

The rules are even simpler. Players would just have to be in an alternating circle. They would have to be in even numbers as well, from 4 to 10 would be best, and would take turns as their “giver”, who tries to ask his or her team players to try and guess as many keywords as they can in a given allotted time. The fun part is the object of the game, and why it is called taboo in the first place. And this is how it is played.

Each card has a taboo word that is listed but may not be spoken. If the “giver”, or the player says one of these taboo words, a “censor” on the other team would hit the buzzer and the giver cannot do anything but go for the next word. The player must not have to say a part of the taboo word as well. The giver or player must also not say what the taboo word is not. The giver may only get his teammate to say the taboo word without having to say words that are outrightly obvious to define the same word.

You could only move to the next word by guessing exactly what the word is as written on the card, and would have to get as many of these words in the period of a minute, or within the allotted time. The next adjacent player would be the one who would go next after the previous player’s time runs out.

The scoring is a plus & minus type, where if you get a correct word you get 1 point, and if you speak a taboo word, you lose one point as a penalty. If you get more points than the other team, then that means you won.

The game is really easy and really fun to do. Your friends would not have to worry about boring days ahead if you know how to be creative and start playing Taboo game. You could even create your own version of the game, as long as the basic rules are in check.
