Many conditions respond well to medications but when it comes to panic attacks treatment confidence in medication is sadly misplaced. The reason is simple. Panic attacks are rarely is ever organic or biological in nature. The physical symptoms of a panic attack are the flight or fight response to a particular way of thinking. Change the thinking and you change the response. But that’s where most people get stuck. How do you change it?
Here are a few suggestions.
Panic attacks are fear based. Fear is always a frightening view of the future with little or no chance of success or safety. We then react to what we think might happen. Our thoughts kick start our flight or flight reaction which had powerful feelings associated with it.
One way for overcoming fear is to focus on the present. Thoughts like “I’m safe now, I’m OK now”, etc, will help you keep grounded in the present.
Another way is learn to accept the fact that we are not in control of life. As much as we would like to think we are in control of our lives, we’re not.
We can not control our heart beat, our breathing, or whether the sun will rise tomorrow. We certainly can not control the stock market, our employer, spouse or children.
There are many things we can control. Hard work, diligence, honesty, kindness, compassion and positive mental attitudes are all actions and attitudes we control. We can choose to imagine a positive future instead of a negative one. As soon as you do that you begin to feel more positive and hopeful. Fear cannot coexist with a positive hopeful outlook on life.
An ongoing focus on a negative future is fertile ground for anxiety and panic disorders of all kinds to flourish. You want to avoid turning your fear into an anxiety disorder.
